I roll over to look at the time and it is 7:07a.m. It takes a few seconds before my covers are being flown aside and my heart starts pounding. I am suppose to sub today at 7:20a.m. and it takes me at least 30 minutes to get to the school. That doesn't include me getting dressed! I was frantic! Luckily the class I am subbing for is the class I did my internship in and they have a new intern who is there today. I call the intern and the school to let them know I am running late. All is well, but I still tear out of my drive way like a bat out of heck.
I get to the class and all I hear from every student for the next 10 minutes is, "Oh Mr. Sosa you are late." Tell me something I don't know. Luckily the inter found the lesson plans and got the kids started in their morning work. I read the plans and immediately jump into the next lesson.
Spelling: Words that have suffix /er/ sound that can be spelled -er, -or, and -ar. They had to brainstorm words that have that ending and decide which of three categories it could fall into.
The first category is "one who", for example a teacher is one who teaches. The next category was "more", for example darker is more dark. Then the last category was "none" for works like summer that have the ending but the suffix means nothing. The kids did great.
Science: We reviewed animal adaptations with an emphasis on the adaptation of camouflage. We discussed the different forms of camouflage like color change and body shape. Then I passed out blank butterfly shapes in which they had to camouflage through out the room. Sometime next week another class will come in and try to see how many they can spot throughout the room. Management during this was craziness but the kids really enjoyed this activity.
The rest of the day was dedicated to kids working on existing projects and catching up on unfinished work. They were definitely rowdy today but had those fantastic moments of quiet hard work. It was just a roller coaster type of day. I had a little pep talk with them about the day and my expectations for the next time when I sub. They seemed to be really responsive.
On one point in the day there were a few boys who were not listening to my instructions. After a few attempt to get their attention they still were not listening. Finally I said in a very firm voice, "You need to get to your desks right now and get to work". The student standing next to me looked at me and said, "Wow Mr. Sosa that was fierce". Even I thought it was. The boys immediately went to their desks and got straight to work. I felt accomplished.
