Friday I was the librarian at Spicewood. I was anticipating spending the day reading children's books and making a list of must haves. That was not the case. I think the whole day I read a total of 3 picture books. I mean the heavy flow of kids was constant and they all needed my help. There was one humorous thing about it though, and it involves a student teacher.
His name is Mr. Fray and it was his last day of student teaching. I ran into his cooperating teacher and she told me what she going to have him do on his last day. A scavenger hunt. I got excited because I love scavenger hunts! This hunt involved him singing a country song to the secretary, making a poster for the library, as well as many other tedious tasks. I got to watch his American Idol performance. I could have been Paula and said it was wonderful, but I went with the harsh realities of Simon.
Midway through the morning I got a call from the Assistant Principal. She said that an aide had called in sick so they would be pulling me to be with a child with autism. I was kind of sad because I was really excited about being a librarian, if only for a day. I was with this child for only an hour before they got a sub to come in and take over. Not that I didn't like the child but I still had an entire world of words waiting for me.
When I got back to the library I printed reports of past due books for each classroom and delivered them. I checked in books that were awaiting to be placed in their homes. I organized the reference section. I delivered the homeless books to their call number houses. I read a book aloud to a group of kinders. When I thought I was through, there was another pile of books that had just got turned it. I swear I ran all around the library putting up books all day.
The only books I got tho read were: "The Seven Chinese Sisters", "Together", and "Sarah's Ponytail". None of these I added to my list of must haves. The day was not a loss, I gained a new friend in the form of a country singing poster maker.
